June is National Safety Month, which is celebrated to keep people safe in the workplace. Our safety professionals work hard to do just that. Today, we get to know Environmental Health and Safety Specialist Scott Buske.
What drew you into a career in safety?
It was a Coast Guard rescue at sea that drove my passion for safety. After seeing a rescue, I decided my career would head in that direction. I enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. Later in my civilian career, I read about some horrific workplace accidents and knew I had to get involved and do what I could to help keep my coworkers safe. A former employer recognized the direction I was choosing and did all they could to help me achieve my goals.
Why is safety in the workplace so important?
We spend at least one-third of our day at work where we are responsible for our safety and the safety of our coworkers.
Fehr Graham strives to be innovative. What is our team doing to keep up to date with the changing times?
As a team, we have the resources to keep up with ever-changing safety and environmental standards and bring this information back to our clients. This not only aids them in the overall safety of their employees but helps with regulatory compliance. A great example of this is now during the pandemic. Fehr Graham has allowed us to continue meeting our clients’ needs by training via Zoom, Teams, YouTube, etc. As a company, Fehr Graham is willing to dedicate the necessary resources to ensure we have the latest and greatest equipment and methods.
If you could teach someone one safety tip, what would it be and why?
Always take a few seconds, for yourself, to evaluate if what you are doing is being done in the safest way possible. Safety is bigger than any one individual. Family, spouses, significant others, friends and pets are all waiting for you to arrive home safely each day. Work safely for them.
