To enhance connectivity and update infrastructure, Illinois Central College's East Peoria campus needed to replace an outdated pedestrian bridge over College Drive, a crucial campus thoroughfare. Illinois Central College hired Fehr Graham to design a bridge that met structural and safety standards and elevated the campus's aesthetic appeal.

Our team, including structural engineers, landscape architects and electrical engineers, worked together to deliver an infrastructure plan that aligned with school leaders' vision for a more cohesive and attractive campus. While following American National Standards Institute (ANI) requirements, the project featured a landscape design that incorporated trenched edging, a variety of shrubs, perennial grasses and vibrant flowers. Our design also included a weather-resistant cabinet to house electrical components, ensuring long-term durability and functionality.

The structural aspect of the project required thorough planning so our team developed design plans, including foundation and abutment designs and geotechnical analysis. We specified performance-based criteria for the bridge and reviewed manufacturer shop drawings to ensure compliance with structural standards.

The new, prefabricated steel truss bridge now stands as a testament to Illinois Central College's commitment to creating functional and inviting campus spaces. This project improves daily transit for students and faculty and enhances the campus's landscape.
